TERMINOLOGY — canonical slugs (Samuel Smiles)

Canonical slug table for this KB. Concept notes in concepts/ are named by these
slugs (English, hyphenated), following the Self-Help vocabulary. The «do not
flatten to» column guards against collapsing Smiles's terms into their modern
motivational-poster descendants — the genre he founded now flattens him.

Notes on flattening

  • self-help is not «успех любой ценой». For Smiles it is the moral root of
    growth and the foundation of national liberty; «Help from without is often
    enfeebling». It is the opposite of the guru's «hack».
  • energy of will is «the very central power of character», «the Man
    himself» — not a productivity trick.
  • true-gentleman is defined by gentleness and «respect for their
    self-respect», explicitly detached from «Riches and rank» — the sociological
    «gentleman» of class is exactly what Smiles argues against.
  • power-of-little-things is an epistemic and moral claim («the close
    observation of little things … is the secret of success»), not merely tidy
    detail-work.
